ACLU Lawsuit Charges Grossly Inadequate Medical Care At State Prison In Nevada (03/06/2008)
ELY, NV – The American Civil Liberties Union filed a class-action lawsuit today against the director of Nevada’s Department of Corrections and other top governmental officials in Nevada for failing to rectify a pervasive pattern of grossly inadequate medical care at the Ely State Prison that creates a substantial risk of serious medical harm for each of the prison’s 1,000 inmates. The lawsuit charges that the prison lacks the most basic elements of an adequate prison health care system and deprives prisoners of the minimal civilized measure of life’s necessities.

Demanda legal de la ACLU denuncia pésima atención médica en prisión estatal del estado de Nevada (03/06/2008)
ELY, NEVADA – La Unión de Libertades Civiles de los Estados Unidos presentó una demanda de acción de clase contra el director del Departamento de Prisiones del estado de Nevada, así como otros funcionarios con puestos elevados en el gobierno del estado, debido a que no han corregido el problema de la pésima atención médica que impera en la Prisión Estatal de Ely, la cual crea un riesgo considerable de graves daños a la salud de los 1,000 reos de la prisión. La demanda acusa que el reclusorio no cuenta ni con los elementos más básicos de un sistema de atención médica adecuado y priva a los prisioneros de las necesidades vitales más fundamentales de una sociedad civilizada.

Nevada School District Agrees To Allow Students To Speak Spanish On Bus (02/15/2008)
LAS VEGAS – After receiving a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union, the Esmeralda County School District has agreed to make it clear that students are allowed to speak Spanish while they ride the school bus and will send a letter to parents - in both Spanish and English - explaining the district’s language policy. The new policy rescinds a ban on speaking Spanish on the bus that was approved by the Esmeralda County School Board in October 2007.

ACLU Calls on Nevada Governor to Address Grossly Inadequate Prison Health Care (12/06/2007)
ELY, NV –The American Civil Liberties Union today called on Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons to investigate deficient medical care at Ely State Prison (ESP), home of Nevada’s death row where, according to a report by a medical expert commissioned by the ACLU, gravely ill prisoners are denied treatment for excruciatingly painful and potentially fatal medical conditions. The ACLU sent the report – along with a letter demanding that the state commit the resources necessary to carry out needed systemic reforms – to Gibbons today after conferring about the problem for several months with Nevada Department of Corrections Director, Howard Skolnik.

Nevada Coalition to End the Death Penalty and ACLU of Nevada Request Stay of Scheduled Execution (10/12/2007)
RENO, NV - The Nevada Coalition to End the Death Penalty (NCADP) and the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada sent a letter to Governor Jim Gibbons, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, Justices of the Nevada Supreme Court and Director of Corrections Howard Skolnik to request a stay of execution of William Castillo scheduled for Monday, October 15, 2007. Castillo volunteered to be executed.

ACLU Supports Investigation Into Civil Liberties Violations by Mayor Frank Melton (07/20/2006)
JACKSON, MS - The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi today announced it’s support for the work of Faye Peterson, Hinds County District Attorney, in investigating allegations that Jackson Mayor Frank Melton has been systematically violating the civil rights of city residents. According to reports from local individuals, Mayor Melton has violated the civil rights of Jacksonians through warrantless searches of homes, vehicles and persons and by violating the due process rights of persons detained and/or accused of crimes.
