ACLU Updates Advisory on "God and Country in the Public Schools" For School Officials, Teachers and Parents (8/25/2000)

RALEIGH, NC - Prompted by the success and widespread acceptance of last school year's distribution, the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina will provide each public school superintendent across the state with a complimentary copy of the publication, "God and Country in the Public Schools."

"This is by far the most popular publication we produce," said Deborah Ross, Executive and Legal Director of the ACLU of North Carolina. "We are glad to provide this important information to the citizens and schools of North Carolina."

For the first time ever, the ACLU distributed "God and Country" to school superintendents last year. Its reader-friendly, question-and-answer format made it a hit among students, parents, and teachers alike. The overwhelming success of the publication led the ACLU to reprint the pamphlet for the 2000-2001 school year.

In light of the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on prayer at football games this year's revised version answers questions regarding student prayer at school events. It also reflects a recent North Carolina Federal Court decision dealing with religious exceptions to school mandated dress codes.
